Forest „Plänterwald“

Bordering the Treptower Park, the “Plänterwald” invites you to recreation in a natural surrounding near the center. This forest’s name is due to the forestry use of this region, where trees of all ages prosper together. Old and ill trees are being chopped down (“auspläntern”) in order to have more space for the young, healthy ones. This “Plänterbetrieb” was founded by gardening director Meyer. The oldest Plänterwaldpromenade, the “Poetensteig” (poet’s steep track) leads to the “Eierhäuschen” (egg house), a popular and traditional “forest inn” at the “Spree”. Originally the house of a forest and park guard was located here until the 19th century. He had chicken and sold fresh eggs to the boat’s crews on the “Spree”. The historic restaurant “Altes Eierhäuschen” (old egg house) is closed at the moment and is waiting for its reconstruction and reopening. Visitors find recreation on forest tracks, Spreepromenades and playgrounds. A place where small children can flounder about in the water offers a lot of summer-fun to families.
