„Köpenick“ Palace
The baroque water palace of the “Hohenzollern” is located on an island at the estuary of the „Dahme“ into the „Spree“ and at the Berlin-Köpenick old town center. It was built for future king Friedrich I. and accommodates today’s museum of art
The baroque palace on the „Schlossinsel“ at „Köpenick’s“ old town center is Berlin-Brandenburg’s only originally conserved baroque palace. It was built on the fundaments of a Slavic castle (6th century) and a renaissance palace (16th century) according to the designs of architects Rutger von Lagerfeld and Arnold Nehring. The artful pargettings by Italian artist Giovanni Caroveri are said to be unique north of the Alps. The palace’s chapel is said to be the Mark Brandenburg’s first Protestant religious building. The “Hohenzollern” used the site as a summer residence and hunting lodge. By order of soldier king Friedrich Wilhelm the sensational desertion lawsuit against his own son - later king Friedrich II. - took place at Köpenick castle in 1730. Friedrich was convicted and only interventions of influential noblemen saved him from the death penalty. From 1749 to 1782 the palace was the widow’s domicile of princess Henriette Marie before earl Schmettau bought it in 1804. He redesigned the castle courtyard and gave order to construct today’s English park. “Köpenick” palace later on became a jail house and from 1851 to 1926 it was site of the first Prussian teacher’s tutorial. Since the sixties of the 20th century the building accommodates the eastern museum of art. After substantial restoration by the foundation of Prussian cultural heritage “Köpenick” palace is open to public since spring of 2004 as museum of spatial art. It displays valuable exhibits from renaissance, baroque and rococo.
